Ensemble wind simulations using a mesh-refined lattice Boltzmann method on GPU-accelerated systems

The wind condition and the plume dispersion in urban areas are strongly affected by buildings and plants, which are hardly described in the conventional mesoscale simulations. To resolve this issue, we developed a GPU-based CFD code using a mesh-refined lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), which enables real-time plume dispersion simulations with a resolution of several meters. However, such high resolution simulations are highly turbulent and the time histories of the results are sensitive to various simulations conditions. In order to improve the reliability of such chaotic simulations, we developed an ensemble simulation approach, which enables a statistical estimation of the uncertainty. We examined the developed code against the field experiment JU2003 in Oklahoma City. In the comparison, the wind conditions showed good agreements, and the average values of the tracer gas concentration satisfied the factor 2 agreements between the ensemble simulation data and the experiment.

Verification of alternative dew point hygrometer for CV-LRT in Monju

In order to reduce the influence on a plant schedule of the MONJU by the maintenance of dew point hygrometers, The JAEA examined a capacitance type dew point hygrometer as an alternative dew point hygrometer for a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer which had been used at the CV-LRT in the MONJU. As a result of comparing a capacitance type dew point hygrometer with a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer at the CV-LRT (Atmosphere: nitrogen, Testing time: 24 hours), there weren't significant difference between a capacitance type dew point hygrometer and a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer. As a result of comparing a capacitance dew point hygrometer with a high-mirror-surface type dew point hygrometer for long term verification (Atmosphere: air, Testing time: 24 months), the JAEA confirmed that a capacitance type dew point hygrometer satisfied the instrument specification ($$pm$$2.04$$^{circ}$$C) required by the JEAC4203-2008.

The International Standards ISO4037-1 of the International Organization for Standardization widely applied in the world to construct X-ray reference fields for performance tests of radiation measuring instruments. The application of the current JAERI's X-ray reference field constructed in accordance with the Japanese Standards should be limited for domestic purposes becase of the characterization technique different from the International Standards. Therefore,for application to international performance tests, X-ray reference fields in the narrow,wide and high air-kerma series based on the International Standards were established using the medium-hard X-ray generator of the Facility of Radiation Standards(FRS), JAERI. This report presents quality characterization, estimation of X-ray spectra of each dose units of the new FRS's fields,and comparison of the qualities and the X-ray spectra to those of the ISO's. The FRS's qualities show good agreement with ISO's: the reference fields should serve for performance tests for international radiation protection purposes.

Development of the flow control irradiation facility for JOYO

This report describes the present situation and problems with the development of the flow control irradiation facility (FLORA). The purpose of FLORA is to run the cladding breach (RTCB) irradiation test under loss of flow conditions in the experimental fast reactor "JOYO". FLORA is a facility like FPTF (Fuel Performance Test Facility) plus BFTF (Breached Fuel Test Facility) in EBR-II, USA. The technical feature of FLORA is its annular linear induction pump (A-LIP), which was developed in response to a need identified through the experiences in the mechanical flow control of FPTF. We have already designed the basic system facility of FLORA for the JOYO MK-II core. However, to put FLORA to practical use in the future, we have to confirm the stability of the JOYO MK-III core condition, solve problems and improve the design. The main results and problems of the development of FLORA are as follows; (1)The results of the development: (a)The neutron detector in FLORA can detect the delayed neutron which is emitted from failed fuel. (b)Out-of-pile A-LIP tests in sodium conditions has been completed. (The length of the tested A-LIP is half the actual size.) Out-of-pile test results showed that the A-LIP achieved a 300$$ell$$/min flow rate and 265kPa pressure in 550$$^{circ}$$C sodium. This pump performance satisfied the FLORA requirements. (c)By controlling the sodium flow rate from 40 to 100% using the A-LIP, we can control the fuel cladding temperature satisfactorily. (2)The problems: (a)In the development of the process detector, it is necessary to miniaturize the neutron detector and test the effect of neutron irradiation and high temperatures on the permanent magnet in the flow meter. (b)The problem which is left about A-LIP is its influence on neutron irradiation. For this purpose, we have to irradiate a small size A-LIP and test its characteristics and electric isolation. The lithium chloride-type dew point detector was used for reactor containment vessel the entire leak rate test (CV-LRT) in fast-breeder reactor Monju (Monju) which needs the maintenance every three months. But when the plant process is considered, it's desirable for the maintenance periods beyond 12 months. Thereupon the capacitance-type dew point detector made in VAISALA Corporation was nominated as the alternative lithium chloride-type dew point detector in Monju. The lithium chloride-type dew point detector, when it's adopted, for, to have to be satisfied a request of the regulations, it's necessary to estimate the performance of the lithium chloride-type dew point detector. In the condition of the CV-LRT, the dew point data were measured by the capacitance-type dew point detector and the lithium chloride-type dew point detector for 24 hours. These data were compared and the performance of the capacitance-type dew point detector was estimated. Furthermore, the dew point data of Monju under the atmosphere ware continuously measured by the capacitance-type dew point detector and the mirror surface-type dew point detector for 2 years. These data were compared and the performance of the capacitance-type dew point detector was estimated. As a result, the capacitance-type dew point detector was confirmed that had the instrument precision that JEAC4203-2008 required.

Release behavior of $$^{203}$$Hg in J-PARC Materials & Life Science Experimental Facility

Various kinds of experiments on material and biological science have been carried out using neutrons and muons generated by bombarding the mercury and muon target with high-energy (3 GeV) and high-intense (1MW) protons in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Faculty (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Complex (J-PAPC). It was found that radioactive nuclide of $$^{203}$$Hg induced in the mercury target during the beam operation was released to the environment via the ventilation system from the stack at specific times during maintenance periods. The weekly-average concentrations of $$^{203}$$Hg in the stack were 2.4 $$times$$10$$^{-10}$$$$sim$$1.5 $$times$$10$$^{-9}$$ Bq/cm$$^{3}$$, which was much less than the legal limit by a factor of 1/10,000. The release behavior of $$^{203}$$Hg will be reported in the presentation.
